Shelton receives national honor from the National Association of Home Builders

Philip SheltonWashington, D.C. – (RealEstateRama) — Philip Shelton, president of Shelton Construction Inc. in Decatur, has been named the 2015 Graduate Master Builder of the Year by the National Association of Home Builders at the International Builders Show in Las Vegas.

The Home Builders Association of Alabama nominated Shelton for the award.

The ultimate symbol of the building professional, the Graduate Master Builder designation is for experienced builders only, requiring a minimum of 10 years of building experience and successful completion of other designation courses; these courses require a significant time commitment and allow graduates to gain a more complete knowledge of all facets of the home building industry.

With a membership of 140,000 builders in the U.S., the National Association of Home Builders offers educational courses through their Home Builders Institute for those members who strive to continue their building education and to be on the cutting edge of the latest technologies. One of the reasons Shelton was selected for the honor is his on-going commitment to the building profession through education and leadership.

The first education tier of the NAHB includes the Certified Graduate Builder and Certified Graduate Remodeler designations. The Graduate Master Builder and Graduate Master Remodeler for builders and remodelers, respectively, are the highest levels offered. Both of these top designations require the successful completion of advanced courses in their fields of specialty, a minimum of 10 years of building experience in the two areas, and proof of proper licensing and insurance. Continuing education is required to maintain all of these certifications. Shelton has earned each of these four certifications as well as additional specialty designations as a Certified Green Professional for a concentration in energy efficient and green building and as a Certified Aging In-Place Specialist for educational programs concerned with building and remodeling to accommodate people’s needs as they grow older and for those with disabilities.

In business since 1993, Shelton is a licensed home builder for residential construction and licensed as a general contractor for commercial construction. He works with clients in Decatur, Athens, Huntsville, Madison and surrounding areas of North Alabama. Shelton is recognized as a leader by his peers. In 2011, the Home Builders Association of Alabama named Shelton the Remodeler of Year. In addition, he was the winner of the Best in Show for the 2009 Alabama Remodeling Excellence awards and has earned nine first place Alabama Remodeling Excellence awards. He has been elected president of the Greater Morgan County Builders Association (GMCBA) three times and was named Remodeler of the Year for 2009‐2012 and 2014 by that organization.

Shelton serves on the advisory board for the Better Business Bureau of North Alabama, on the board of directors for the GMCBA and the Home Builders Association of Alabama, and is a member of the Huntsville-Madison County Home Builders Association.

“By presenting the Designee of the Year awards, NAHB honors an individual each year who fully embody our ideals,” said 2015 NAHB Education Chair Tom Stephani. “These are our leaders. They incorporate innovative practices and techniques that ultimately benefit home buyers and home owners as they shine a positive light on our industry and inspire others through their commitment to excellence.”

The National Association of Home Builders is a Washington-based trade association, representing more than 140,000 members involved in home building, remodeling, multifamily construction, property management, subcontracting, design, housing finance, building product manufacturing and other aspects of residential and light commercial construction. NAHB is affiliated with 800 state and local home builders associations around the country. NAHB’s builder members will construct about 80 percent of the new housing units projected for this year.
