March 10, 2009 – (RealEstateRama) — General contractors, homebuilders and construction trade contractors will have an opportunity to stay current on construction safety by attending free conferences in Montgomery and Mobile.
The one-day conferences are sponsored by OSHA, Safe State, construction trade associations, including the HBAA and local HBA, individual construction companies, local governmental entities and utility companies. The opening general session will feature the new director of the Mobile Area Office for OSHA, Kurt Petermeyer, who will provide an update on enforcement emphasis for this office’s jurisdiction – central and south Alabama. Each conference will offer a selection of sessions on a variety of construction safety topics, including residential fall protection requirements.
Also offered is the option of completing six-hour courses for competent person certification for trenching & excavating and for scaffolding. These are two areas of construction where oversight by a competent person is mandatory. OSHA defines a competent person as one who is capable of identifying existing and predictable hazards in the surroundings or working conditions which are unsanitary, hazardous, or dangerous and possesses the authority to take corrective action. These courses typically cost $100 and up per person.
The dates for the conferences are:

Gulf Coast Safety Conference

Admission to conferences such as these could cost hundreds of dollars, but thanks to the generosity of vendors and sponsoring organizations, these two conferences are offered at no cost.
