MONTGOMERY – August 22, 2012 – (RealEstateRama) — Governor Robert Bentley on Tuesday announced the timeline for a special election to fill the District 34 seat in the Alabama House of Representatives. The District 34 seat is being vacated by Representative Elwyn Thomas, who was recently appointed by Governor Bentley to serve as Executive Director of the Alabama Manufactured Housing Commission.
“I appreciate Representative Thomas for his many years of service in the Alabama House of Representatives, and it’s important that we maintain representation for the people of District 34,” Governor Bentley said. “We had several goals in mind as we established this special election timeline. This timeline will give candidates time to qualify for the election, it will give voters time to learn about the candidates, and it will allow time for voters to arrange a vote by absentee ballot if necessary. This timeline should also help us ensure that District 34 will have representation in place by the next regular legislative session.”
House District 34 covers much of Blount County and a portion of northern Jefferson County.
A special primary election for the District 34 seat will be held on Tuesday, October 23, 2012. If special primary runoff elections are necessary, they will be held on Tuesday, December 11, 2012. If runoff elections are not necessary, the special general election would take place on that day – Tuesday, December 11, 2012. If runoff elections are necessary on December 11, the special general election will be held on Tuesday, January 29, 2013.
Candidates qualifying with major political parties must do so by 5:00 p.m. on Friday, September 7, 2012. The two major political parties are to certify their qualified candidates to the Secretary of State as soon as possible after the qualification deadline, but by no later than 5:00 p.m. on Friday, September 14, 2012. All third-party candidates, independent candidates, and/or minor party candidates seeking ballot access are advised that their deadline for filing the appropriate notification, petitions, or supporting paperwork with the Secretary of State shall be Friday, September 14, 2012, at 5:00 p.m.
Rep. Thomas will hold the District 34 seat until August 31, 2012. His appointment to the Executive Director’s position at the Alabama Manufactured Housing Commission is effective September 1, 2012.
